Somebody
will say: "is not possible, it looks pretty new". In effect
the upper part of the body is full of finger thumbs but you can't
see it on the picture. A bass player use to beat or thumb on the
body.
It
was 1976 and I was going to be professional, before that I had played
only low budget basses. But I was decided, I will have a brand new,
fabulous Rickenbacker with stereo output. No matter what, sure I
would not pay it cash. |
| I
tried that bass for months and nobody could take it off my mind. Have
you ever desired to buy a fabulous car? You don't care if they give
you a good used for free. After I sold my Ibanez (no sound at that
time) the dealer borrowed me various basses for some gigs, one of
this was a Coronado (great bass) and sometimes I got a friend's 67
or 69 Jazz Bass (beautiful sound). Nevertheless that day I was going
to have a new Rickenbacker and stop. |

"Let's
make the deal, finally" I said. Soon he asked me, "there is
a Fender, are you interested?", probably he got it for few money.
"Look, I don't want to try any other bass", I almost tried all his
basses including a brand new Fender Jazz Bass which didn't appealed me.
Of course a dealer prefers to sell a used for cash than a new for delayed
payment.
He insisted, went to the other room and come back with something in the
hands. "Oh God" I said, "what is this?". Wasn't really
shining.
Guess which color it was. Yes, you got it, Sunburst. I always hated that
finish. Everybody had a Sunburst at that time.
"Look, also my Ibanez replica was a Sunburst and I don't want to try any
other bass. Can't we go ahead with the deal I am intending to do?"
A seller is a seller, he don't give it up easily, "sure" he replied "but
what it costs to you, while we talk you can plug it and hear it, after
all is a 60's Jazz Bass".
He used to be also a musician and he knew the difference between 60's and
70's Jazz Basses. Well a 60's bass was worth a try, at least just to make
him leave the argument.
I switched on and play a phrase, I couldn't believe my ears. Even thou
the E string was often escaping from its place it was sounding like no
other basses I have had in my hands, including the Rickenbacker and the
new Jazz Bass. |
| Full,
warm, deep and clear, and also punch. It was The Bass. But what I say?
it was not sounding, it was singing. Have you ever heard about Stradivari,
Bambin Del Gesù? I was just missing a bow, but never mind, I am
not a violinist or a cellist. Contine... let's
get more deep. |
